My Top 5 Favorite Things that Keep Me Energized and Engaged During the Work Week

It’s April, Easter is here, and we’re well into 2019. I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t be more excited about spring. I live in Atlanta which had a 3-month-long case of grey skies, so spring blossoms and sunshine are very welcome. And I will likely break up with my well-loved grey and black workwear for a full month to boost my mood.

Spring is the perfect season to release your inner “Marie Kondo” and identify the things that spark joy and increase your productivity, whether you work inside or out of your home. So - working women, wives, moms - if you’re in need of a little refresher this spring, here are some of my new favorites and “tried and true’s.”

1. Footwear - ROTHYS

I know, I know! Old news, right? But I need to tell you how these shoes have changed my daily work life - they’re ethically made, machine washable, look sleek no matter how many times they’re worn, and are unbelievably comfortable. 2. Beauty/Accessories - LOOK FRESH, FEEL FRESH

Hear me when I say this: beauty is not defined by looks. We all know this! But as working women, we’ve also learned that the more presentable we feel, the more upbeat and engaged we can be during those long days. I like to keep makeup and accessories to a minimum, but after 12-24 hour shifts of face time with patients, I’ve began appreciating the value in a classy pair of earrings and long-wear lipstick.

3. professionalism - JUST SAYING

Joe McCormack has a brilliant podcast called Just Saying. In 5-10 minute episodes, he teaches the art of brief, clear, and concise communications in the workplace, in teams, and in relationships. It’s easy to listen to 2 or 3 of his podcasts a week, and I immediately integrate his tips into my work day. He teaches how to craft unforgettable emails, direct conversations, negotiate deals, and converse better with family and friends.

He also wrote a book, Brief: Make a Bigger Impact by Saying Lessand he has free tools and PDFs from his website. Practical tips for a working woman in a pinch!

 
 

4. Reflection/Prayer - “ONE LINE A DAY” JOURNAL

I don’t know about you, but I am a paper and pen kind of woman. This is a great tool for growing in gratitude, shifting into a new role, reflecting on your day, or climbing towards important goals. I have used this method for all of the above and my pages reflect transitions between different phases in in both my work and personal life. It is difficult to find time to journal between my job and family time, but this brief journaling allows me to make the daily transition, so my mind isn’t constantly wrapped up in work or study mode. If you’re anything like me, a blank page, or rather a few blank few lines, is like a little slice of freedom! 

 
 
 
 
 

5. Social App - MARCO POLO

Nowadays, the chances are you have lived in more than one state and either travel for work or travel to visit family and friends. It’s almost unheard of to have the privilege of living close to everyone you know and love. So for your busy work schedule - whether it’s 9-5, shift work, overnights, or traveling - this app is great for leaving video messages with the people you need to keep in touch with! It minimizes the impact of out-of-sync work schedules and time-zones, and it’s a life-saver for long-distance relationships when you need a little face time and work or sleep schedules don’t quite match up.

Sammi Ratcliffe spends the majority of her time studying while she prepares for state board exams as a Nurse Midwife and Nurse Practitioner. She and her husband are a Navy Family and now call many places on both coasts of the US home. The Ratcliffes are avid international travelers and devoted adoption advocates.

NFP Method of Choice: The Ratcliffes currently use the Creighton Model for their family planning goals. But Sammi isn’t biased towards any FABM/NFP method and loves finding the “method of best fit” for each woman and family!
